On May 2nd, King Edward IV. granted to Sir Thomas Pilkington, as a reward for his good services, a license to fortify and castleeate" his principal residence, the Manor House of Bury. Sir Thomas's other residences were Stand Hall, Pilkington, and Stagenhoe, near St. Albans, Herts.(9)
