Sir Nicholas Mosley died. He was a prosperous merchant, and managed the exportation of goods from London which were manufactured under the direction of his brother Anstrey at Manchester. He was Lord Mayor of London in 1599, and was knighted by Queen Elizabeth. He became Lord of the Manor of Manchester in 1596, and in 1604 was High Sheriff of Lancashire. He is buried in Didsbury church. His character has been drawn as an energetic trader and pious Christian, and also as one careless how his money was gained and living and dying a miser. (Mosley’s Family Memorials; Axon’s Lancashire Gleanings.) His son Rowland succeeded as Lord of the Manor. (7)
