A petition, signed by 341 persons, was presented to Lord Derby for the removal of John Hartley, of Strangeways, from the commission of the peace. The document is printed in the Palatine Note-book, vol. iii., p. 37, and vol iv., p. 87, with various biographical particulars. The complaints against him are for wrongful assessments, withholding 40s. per annum left by his father for the repair of the conduit, &c. There had been a previous quarrel between Hartley and John Alexander, one of the constables, who had been his tenant.(7)
