Nicholas
Stratford,
Bishop of Chester, a former warden of the Collegiate Church, died September 12.
Dr. Stratford was Dean of St. Asaph, Prebendary of Lincoln, and had the
living of Llanroost, in Wales. Having married a daughter of the Bishop of
Rochester, he was appointed warden of Manchester at the age of 34. The close of
his wardenship, in 1684, was marked by political and religious distractions.
Persecutions became fierce. Stratford, to his honour, alleviated the
suffering, and prevented, as far as he could, the persecution of the Dissenters
in Manchester. He was the author of A
Dissuasive from Revenge, 1684 (this he dedicated to the people of
Manchester), A Discourse of the Pope’s
Supremacy, 1688, and other writings.(7)
